Amsterdam Car City is a temporary exhibition for the Van Eesteren Museum about the impact of the automobile on Amsterdam’s urban development. The exhibition is organised into three themes: streets, buildings and cars and displays work of Jokinen, Teun Koolhaas, Bakema, et al. Each of the themes is expressed through its own spatial language. Streets rise from the floor, building stories are presented on white volumes, and car-related objects are displayed on black plinths reminiscent of asphalt. A material palette of metal, industrial finishes, and highway guardrails used as seating reinforces the narrative, bringing the language of roads and infrastructure into the exhibition space.
